Sierra Club of Howard County

The Sierra Club is America’s oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization.  Since 1892, the Sierra Club has been working to protect communities, wild places, and the planet itself.  The local Howard County group encourages enjoying and exploring nature and stewardship of our local environment.

ACTIVITIES

The Sierra Club of Howard County provides education programs for the public several times a year at no cost.  They also have an active schedule of outdoor activities for the public such as hiking and camping.  These can be found on their website at www.maryland.sierraclub.org/hc/outings.html

The Sierra Club of Howard County also supports the following programs:

  • International Coastal Cleanup — held the third Saturday in September.  The Club supplies volunteers and funds for trash bags and trash pickers.
  • GreenFest — supports the festival with an information booth and purchased trees to plant a stream buffer at Howard Community College.
  • Project Clean Stream — supplies volunteers and funds for trash bags and trash pickers.
  • Herp Atlas (MD Amphibian & Reptile Atlas) -  this is a 5 year survey starting in 2010 of amphibians and reptiles in Maryland.  Sierra Club supports this project with funds for supplies and with volunteers.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteers are encouraged to participate in the activities listed above, especially the International Coastal Cleanup and Project Clean Stream.

It is easy to participate in the Herp Atlas.  Volunteers can join an organized “herp search” by contacting Sue Muller.  Volunteers can also participate more informally by taking pictures of reptiles and amphibians found on their property, or anywhere in Maryland.  Please send photos to Sue Muller, smuller@howardcountymd.gov.  Call or email Sue at 410−313−4697 with questions related to the herp atlas.  Visit the Herp Atlas website for background information on the project: www.howardbirds.org/herpatlas/HC_MARA_Maps_shell.php.
