The Howard County Legacy Leadership Institute for the Environment (HoLLIE) is an intense environmental education program for adult volunteers. HoLLIE, geared toward residents age 50+, offers a combination of classroom and field trip experiences to prepare volunteer leaders to work in an important, local, non-profit environmental organization.
In the classroom phase, earth system scientists will describe satellite data and explain the implications for a changing climate from a global perspective. Policy makers and leaders of environmental organizations explore regional history, geography, and ecological systems. Regional and local experts examine environmental conditions in the Chesapeake Bay watershed and Howard County. Leadership training is woven into the curriculum.
Small classes, limited to 15 people, are held during the day, twice per week from February to March at the Robinson Nature Center in Columbia, the Howard County Conservancy at Mt. Pleasant Farm in Woodstock, and at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt.
In March, HoLLIE students begin a mentored field placement with one of HoLLIE’s partner organizations with graduation is in September. During 150 hours of internship, HoLLIEs have the opportunity to futher the goals of the non-profit partner organizations by creating new programs, researching best practices, establishing a working team or teaching about nature.
