Howard County Conservancy

The Howard County Con­ser­vancy is a local non-profit envi­ron­men­tal edu­ca­tion cen­ter and land trust. The Con­ser­vancy was founded in 1990 to help pre­serve the nat­ural envi­ron­ment, agri­cul­tural farm­land, and unique his­toric sites in Howard County.

ACTIVITIES

  • Envi­ron­men­tal Edu­ca­tion — The Howard County Con­ser­vancy is an envi­ron­men­tal edu­ca­tion cen­ter.   Six thou­sand stu­dents par­tic­i­pate in pro­grams at the Con­ser­vancy each year includ­ing field trips, ser­vice learn­ing, scout activ­i­ties, sum­mer camps and more.
  • Envi­ron­men­tal Pro­grams — The Con­ser­vancy offers dozens of year-round edu­ca­tional pro­grams for adults and chil­dren, hosts spe­cial events, pro­vides numer­ous vol­un­teer oppor­tu­ni­ties and edu­cates Howard County res­i­dents about land conservation.
  • Con­ser­va­tion Ease­ments — The Con­ser­vancy pro­tects open space and agri­cul­tural resources of Howard County by acquir­ing land through gift or through donated con­ser­va­tion ease­ments. Cur­rently the Con­ser­vancy holds ease­ments on 1,200 acres around the county includ­ing six his­toric homes.
  • Gar­dens — The Con­ser­vancy main­tains gar­dens includ­ing a memo­r­ial gar­den and a com­mu­nity garden.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Vol­un­teers are the back­bone of the Howard County Con­ser­vancy.  Hun­dreds of vol­un­teers help every year. Below are some of the vol­un­teer oppor­tu­ni­ties at the Con­ser­vancy.  Please check the web­site also. www.hcconservancy.org/volunteer.php

  • Vol­un­teer Nat­u­ral­ists  — lead nature walks for kinder­garten through eighth grade Howard County stu­dents. We pro­vide four train­ing ses­sions, one morn­ing a week in March and Sep­tem­ber. The com­mit­ment is to lead five nature walks a year (we appre­ci­ate more!).
  • Games and Crafts Assis­tants  — teach Howard County school chil­dren such things as how to make but­ter­flies or become fire­flies. Lead adults in crafts using nat­ural mate­ri­als at events and in workshops.
  • Drop-in Gar­den­ing and Habi­tat Restora­tion  — oppor­tu­ni­ties include drop in gar­den­ing on Wednes­day morn­ings (all lev­els of expe­ri­ence wel­come!), habi­tat restora­tion work­groups on Thurs­day after­noons and occa­sional Sat­ur­days, and a chil­drens’ gar­den­ing group on the first and third Sat­ur­day and sec­ond and fourth Wednes­day.   • Office Vol­un­teers — The Gudel­sky Edu­ca­tion Cen­ter is open to the pub­lic from Wednes­day through Sat­ur­day. We are look­ing for vol­un­teers to be greeters and gift shop assis­tants. The Con­ser­vancy also needs help in the office with bulk mail­ings, the newslet­ters and other cler­i­cal duties.
  • Event Vol­un­teers — are needed to help with spe­cial events at the Con­ser­vancy. We need help to set-up, clean up, staff the wel­come tables, assist with refresh­ments and all the other needs of a pub­lic event.
  • Ani­mal Care Vol­un­teers  — help to feed, water and clean the ani­mals and their cages. We have ter­rap­ins, chick­ens, goats and a tree frog. This is a great fam­ily vol­un­teer oppor­tu­nity. Per­sons over 14 may apply and a one-hour train­ing is required. Vol­un­teers need to be avail­able between 9:00am – 3:00pm week­days to have access to indoor animals.
  • Sum­mer Junior Camp Coun­selors  — are trained to assist our Coun­selors dur­ing sum­mer nature camps. We invite teenagers 14 to 18 years of age to apply.
