What are local governments doing?
Local governments in the region are setting goals and exploring sustainable practices that can be integrated into both governmental operations and all aspects of community life. Sustainability planning at the local level involves a variety of departments such as, planning and zoning, public works, recreation and parks and economic development. Several local jurisdictions have created a separate sustainability office to coordinate sustainability planning efforts across departments. Explore each jurisdictions’ links below to learn more.

Regional Sustainability Committee
In October 2008, the Board of Directors of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council (BMC) created a Regional Sustainability Committee (RSC). The mission of the RSC is to share information and coordinate sustainability actions within the Baltimore region in order to improve the quality of life for all citizens. The RSC is made up of representatives from BMC member jurisdictions. A representative from Frederick County participates as an associate member.
Goals
The RSC will focus its efforts in three areas:
- Coordinating regional sustainability programs.
- Fostering cooperation between state and local governments.
- Maximizing partnerships with public, private and quasi-governmental agencies.
